Wedding Skincare Prep

We love skincare here at Émerveillé, and prepping your skin prior to your wedding day will help you feel and look your best on your wedding day! It will also help provide a clean canvas for any makeup that you may have for your wedding day. We have a few pieces of advice for your skin to ensure that you feel confident on your wedding day.

1. Don’t Use Any New Products

First of all, don’t use any new products in the month leading up to your wedding day. This includes moisturisers, acne products, body lotion, and makeup. The last thing that you would want on your wedding day is to have broken out in an allergic reaction (and unfortunately it takes some time before it goes away). Start any new products as soon as possible so you have time to adjust and learn what works best for you. A few years ago, I decided to try a new foundation for Boxing Day festivities, and ended up having an allergic reaction to the foundation. Unfortunately, with skincare reactions for me, it doesn’t clear up after I take off the makeup, but rather takes a few days for the reaction to go away. That meant that I was dealing with a pretty nasty allergic reaction on my face during a New Years Eve party, and even with the attempt to cover it in makeup, it was still visible and people would ask me what was wrong. That is the last thing that you want for your wedding day, and luckily because of that I knew what ingredients to stay away from on my wedding day five months later.

2. Start a Skincare Routine

Next, if you don’t have a regular skincare routine, start a skincare routine. The sooner you start a skincare routine, the sooner that you can begin to figure out what products and routines work well for you and your skin. This also helps provide time to determine if there’s any products that your skin may not react well to (as previously mentioned), so you can have time to figure out those issues and begin to clear up your skin. Having a routine for the morning that preps your face to go out into the world and the sun is a great way to start the day, and then a routine for the evening to take off makeup, dirt, and prime your skin overnight for the next day is what I would recommend.

3. Drink Water

If you are not regularly drinking water, begin drinking water regularly immediately. I am personally guilty of struggling with this one, but when I began to drink more water at my team’s encouragement, I noticed that I felt better and my skin began to look better (and was softer!). Getting into this habit early will have a ton of health benefits, and is great to maintain in a season of celebrating where you may have champagne at the engagement party, cocktails at the bach party, go wine tasting with family coming into town for the wedding, and then enjoy your signature margarita (or whatever you choose as your signature cocktail) on your wedding day. Water is one of the best gifts you can give to yourself in this season.

4. Use Sunscreen Daily

This is great to not just prep for your wedding day, but also will help mitigate sun spots and wrinkles down the line. Apply a moisturiser to your face that has SPF in it daily (yes, even if you live in the rainy PNW), and make sure you apply all over your body when you are going outside on sunny days. In the weeks leading up to my wedding, I was working outside so that I could get a base tan (which isn’t the best thing to do for your skin, but I can’t change that now). I ended up closing my laptop and laying down for a few minutes, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up two hours later to a bright red burn on my back and some intense tan/burn lines from my sports bra. This was eight days before my wedding, and my maid of honour was ready to kill me when she saw my back. What we ended up doing was finding a shirt that allowed for the white parts of my back to show from my burn lines, applied sunscreen heavily to all of the burned areas, and I had to go out and intentionally burn the areas of my back that my sports bra had initially protected. I would absolutely not recommending doing this at all, but this could have easily been prevented if I had applied sunscreen, and probably if I stayed out of the sun and spray tanned before my wedding instead.

If you aren’t sure what next steps to take prior to your wedding day, talk to your makeup artist or your dermatologist! Getting into new habits prior to your wedding day to help your skin will benefit you not only on your wedding day, but will be great habits to maintain afterwards to help you feel your best.
