Speech Writing Tips for Wedding Parties

When it comes to weddings, the speeches can often be the most intimidating aspect for wedding party members. We have all heard those bad speeches, whether they are cliché or contain stories that are not family friendly. As wedding planners, we have heard our fair share of bad speeches, and also EXCELLENT speeches that have left a room in tears. We have compiled some tips to write an excellent speech.

  1. Talk about both members of the couple. Yes, you may be standing next to one of them on their wedding day, but this day is about both of them and celebrating their love. Talk about why you think they are perfect for each other, what you appreciate about each of them, and what you are most excited for in this next coming season for each of them

  2. Don't insult the couple. This is their big day, and you don't want to offend them on their wedding day in front of all their friends and family. This doesn't just look like having a roast of the couple while on the mic. This also looks like avoiding stories about exes, their crazy partying years, or exes (yes, I said it twice but I've heard too many stories during speeches about exes. It is just awkward)

  3. Have the speech written at least a week in advance. This allows you plenty of time to revise, have someone else in the wedding party edit, and to practice it. Many horror stories of bad wedding speeches are the result of last minute planning and no preparation.
